Laser tattoo removal: how it works and what to expect
A gentle, gradual method that leaves no scars. We have summarised how the laser works, how many sessions you need and what determines the result.
How does laser tattoo removal work?
The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser emits nanosecond light pulses that break the tattoo's pigment particles into tiny fragments. Over the following weeks the body's immune system gradually clears the fragmented particles, so the tattoo fades from session to session.
How many sessions does it take?
It depends on the colour, age, size and depth of the tattoo, so we assess it at the consultation. The pigment fades gradually, so several sessions are needed, and between treatments the skin needs time to heal.
Does it hurt?
It causes a short, sharp, stinging sensation that varies with the size of the tattoo and the treated area. At the consultation we will tell you what to expect.
Will it leave a scar?
We work with a careful, gradual method so that no scar is left. According to the literature, the risk of scarring is low with protocol-based Q-switched Nd:YAG treatments, but it cannot be ruled out entirely. If a scar nevertheless develops after a treatment done at our salon, we offer immediate scar treatment at a discounted price.
Can every tattoo be removed?
Whether a tattoo can be removed depends on the colour, depth and age of the pigment. Some colours, such as lighter shades and green, are harder to remove, and complete removal cannot be guaranteed. At the consultation we tell you what a realistic goal is.
How much does it cost?
The price depends on the size, colour and depth of the tattoo, so we give a price after a prior consultation. You will find the details on the tattoo removal page.
