The key difference in brief

WaxLaser hair removal
The resultInstantly smooth skin, but temporary.Gradual, long-lasting hair reduction.
How long it lastsThe hair usually grows back within 2–3 weeks. After the treatment series (usually 6–12 sessions), 1 maintenance treatment a year is enough.
Hair length and colourHair about 0.5–2 cm long is ideal. Most effective on dark hair; less effective, or not at all, on blond, grey and red hair.
What it feels likeA brief, sharp pulling sensation as the hair is removed.A brief, warm, stinging sensation; many compare it to a rubber band snap.
When it is not recommendedDuring and after a course of oral retinoids, and on irritated, damaged or inflamed skin. With photosensitising medication, active skin conditions, wounds, infections, or a fresh tan.

When is waxing the right choice?

Waxing is ideal if you want smooth skin quickly, for example before an important event, or want to tidy up a smaller area such as the nose, ears or eyebrows. It is also a good choice if your hair is light or grey, because laser is less effective then.

It is important not to shave the hair before the treatment: wax can only grip hairs that are at least half a centimetre long. We trim longer hair at the salon.

When to choose laser hair removal?

If you are looking for a lasting solution instead of repeated shaving, laser is the better route. On larger areas such as the back, chest or stomach it pays off especially well, because from session to session it thins out and fines down the regrowing hair. The series takes several sessions, so it is worth starting in good time.

Can they be combined?

Between laser treatments, do not wax or epilate, because the laser needs the root of the hair. If you are having laser treatments, waxing is therefore not a good choice on the same area during the series.

How do you decide?

  • You need a quick, one-off solution: wax.
  • You need to remove light or grey hair: wax.
  • You want a lasting result and your hair is dark: laser hair removal.
  • You are unsure: at a free consultation we examine your skin and hair type.
